Studio Policies & Information

Dr. Ara Koh’s Piano Studio provides advanced and intermediate instruction tailored for students of all ages.
Admissions are selective and conducted via an interview and trial lesson process drawn from the waiting list. Please note that during the trial lesson interview, my focus is not on how well
the student plays. Instead, I evaluate whether they enjoy playing the piano, possess self-discipline, and are a good fit for my teaching style.

Personally, while having a great teacher and a skilled student is important, finding the right personal and musical chemistry between the student and myself is my top priority. If I believe a student would thrive under a different instructional approach, I am always pleased to provide a thoughtful referral, regardless of their talent level.

Practicing:

I encourage all students to practice daily and foster their creativity and curiosity with music. I aim to teach them not only how music is composed, but also how they can create their own compositions. I firmly believe that a well-rounded musical education allows students to discover what music truly means to them. I approach each student as an individual, challenging them according to their unique potential. While learning the piano can be difficult and may not always feel "fun," with dedicated time and structured practice, students will come to appreciate the many facets of this art. The quality and consistency of practice matter far more than the quantity.

Parent Expectation:

* Students are expected to attend each lesson regularly, come well-prepared, and bring their assignment books and music.
* Parents may choose to attend the lesson or not. (Please ensure that students are picked up and drop off on time and avoid arriving more than 5 minutes early. There will be no make-up time for late arrivals.)

Performance Opportunities & Recitals

Formal recitals are held at least once per semester, providing students with an inspiring platform to share their progress with family and friends. Studio recitals are typically hosted at premier venues, including the UIW Seddon Recital Hall, UIW Concert Hall, and the Steinway Gallery.
Additional performance avenues—such as the Composers Alliance of San Antonio (CASA), local festivals, and competitive events—are available for interested students.

Tuition & Rates

Tuition reserves a dedicated, recurring time slot in the studio schedule. Payment is due in full by the first lesson of each month.

Cancellations & Make-up Policy

• Missed lessons are non-refundable. The tuition you pay secures an exclusive weekly time slot for your child, which cannot be resold, and due to limited availability, I am unable to offer extra lessons.
• Student Absences: Make-up lessons are not provided except in cases of illness, family emergencies, or mandatory school events (with at least 48 hours' advance notice). Please choose a lesson time free from recurring conflicts.
• Teacher Absences: If Dr. Koh must cancel a lesson, a full refund or a rescheduled make-uptime will be arranged.
•Withdrawal: Students may discontinue lessons at any time. Advance notice is greatlyappreciated so the slot may be offered to a student on the waiting pool.

Academic Calendar & Performing Artist Statement

• Academic Year: The primary teaching session runs from August 1st through May 31st.
• Summer Term (June – July): Due to summer music festivals and artistic engagements, scheduling during June and July is flexible and adjusted by mutual agreement.
• Professional Engagements: As an active performing artist, Dr. Koh balances teaching with professional concerts. While your reserved lesson time is strictly protected against personal conflicts, Dr. Koh reserves the right to occasionally adjust the studio schedule to accommodate major performance opportunities. Ample notice and reschedulingoptions will always be provided.
